Squid Game Isn’t Done Playing with Player 456

The original Squid Game was a perfect limited series — a bite-sized frenzy of gore and class analysis that took over the world. But that whole “world domination” thing meant that it, of course, had to get a second season. Call it the Big Little Lies effect. In the latest trailer for the show’s upcoming second season, even fellow contestants are asking Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) why he would come back. Well, because the show was number one on Netflix, of course! Or according to him, because he’s trying to shut this deadly game down for good and lead a fight against its creators. He doesn’t seem to be immediately successful, though. One pushy contestant is happy to send others stumbling to death via robot-doll, and everyone looks entranced by a giant piggy bank full of money they probably need for very sad reasons. At one point, people even start chanting, “One more game!”

An ominous voice that sounds a lot like the Front Man’s suggests that the game won’t end unless the world changes. And can Gi-hun really find a way to tackle capitalism so quickly? Hey, we trust series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk with our lives (maybe a bad decision), and the show, as always, looks absolutely gorgeous. What? We’re supposed to pretend that we’re not curious about that murderous merry-go-round? That we’re not going to watch immediately when season two debuts on December 26? The whole family will, post Christmas. You grandma, your nephew, your cousin …
