Zico and BLACKPINK‘s Jennie collaborated for the first time with the song “SPOT.” Released on April 26, it quickly shot to the top of the charts.
In an interview on KStarNextDoor4, Zico revealed how he was able to get Jennie to feature on the hit song. He first explained that it is always up to him to recruit his co-singers.
We were just acquaintances…I usually call [artists I collaborate with] myself.

Rather than having a song ready for Jennie to add her vocals to, Zico said it was the opposite. He admitted that the track “was customized” just for her.
I don’t decide the singer for the song. I decided to work with Jennie and wrote the song.

In fact, he wrote up to six songs just for Jennie’s perusal. He prepared various genres so she would have have a good variety to choose from.
I had 6 songs prepared. Then I reduced it to 2 songs. [I asked her] ‘What fits you more? I don’t know what you’d like, so I prepared everything.’

She ended up picking “SPOT” after listening to it once. Zico encouraged her, saying, “If you like it, let’s do it.” His priority, he said, was always to make her feel at ease.
When I ask her to feature the song, I make her feel at ease so she can listen to it at ease. I must not give her pressure.
